How to choose and use magnetic beads
What are magnetic beads?Magnetic beads consist of tiny (20 to 30 nm) iron oxide particles that are superparamagnetic. So they are different to common ferromagnets, in that they only exhibit magnetism in the presence of an external magnetic field. This property depends on the small size of the particles in the beads and enables the beads to separate in suspension along with whatever they are bound to. Since they don't attract each other outside the magnetic field, there's no need to worry about them clumping.
There are many types of magnetic beads. Different surface coatings and chemistries determine each type of bead's own properties and can be used for magnetic separation of nucleic acids, proteins or other biomolecules in a simple, efficient and scalable manner.
This ease of use is ideal for a variety of applications, including sample preparation for next-generation sequencing (NGS) and PCR, protein purification, molecular and immunodiagnostics.
What is the magnetic beads DNA extraction?
Magnetic beads have remained largely unchanged in nucleic acid purification for decades, relying on the use of magnetic beads with a coating that can reversibly bind nucleic acids by adjusting buffer conditions.
After binding the DNA, an external magnetic field attracts the beads to the outer edge of the holding tube, and when the beads are immobilized, the DNA bound to the beads is retained during the washing steps. Elution buffer is added and the magnetic field is removed, and the DNA is released as a purified sample, ready for quantification and analysis.
What are the advantages of magnetic bead DNA extraction?
A key advantage of using magnetic beads is that you can isolate nucleic acids and other biomolecules directly from the original sample, as well as from a variety of different types of samples, with minimal handling. This method requires no vacuum or centrifugation, requires fewer steps and reagents than other DNA extraction protocols, and can be automated.
This distinguishes magnetic beads from other nucleic acid isolation methods that may have different protocols for different types of samples and require more hands-on time.
Geneture Medical provides one stop solution of Nucleic Acid Extraction and Analysis, and has now developed a number of commercial bead-based nucleic acid isolation kits. Our protocol requires fewer steps and reagents than other DNA extraction protocols and can be automated in 24, 96-deep well plates. We know what it takes to succeed. We first work with you to understand your specific challenges and then our experts will design, develop, manufacture, and validate complete assay solutions for your molecular diagnostic assay. Our quality system is an integral part of every step in the molecular diagnostics assay development and manufacturing process. We operate under the most rigorous requirements of ISO 13485:2016, from early-stage development to tech transfer, scale up, validation, verification, and commercial production.
